Supporters of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) blocked the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Diamer on Saturday to protest the election result in the GBA-16 Diamer-II constituency. The protest began after the Election Commission notified independent candidate Imam Malik as the winner, allegedly without completing the counting of postal ballots or preparing the final consolidated result form.

The blockade at multiple locations in Chilas disrupted traffic between Gilgit-Baltistan and the rest of Pakistan, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Protesters, supporting PPP candidate Attaullah Khan, claim the notification of Malik is illegal and demand the implementation of an earlier order by the GB Chief Election Commissioner to prepare a consolidated result after counting all postal votes.

The situation was further complicated after the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) announced that Imam Malik had joined their party. PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari alleged that the IPP had sought government positions in exchange for its support in forming the government.

Amid the dispute, the PPP, which emerged as the largest party with nine seats in the recent GB elections, has nominated Amjad Hussain Advocate as its candidate for Chief Minister. Hussain, who is the president of PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter, is the party’s first-ever CM nominee from the Gilgit region.
