Train Driver Killed, Nine Critical in UK Passenger Train Collision
A train driver was killed and nine people remain in critical condition after two passenger trains collided near Bedford, approximately 100 kilometres north of London, on Friday evening.
The collision occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time and involved two services bound for London St Pancras International station from Nottingham and Corby. Reports suggest the Corby train struck the rear of the Nottingham train. The driver of one of the trains died at the scene.
British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi provided an update on Saturday, stating that over 80 people received hospital treatment, with 28 remaining hospitalized. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident.
A passenger on one of the trains described a “sudden crash” and witnessed passengers with serious injuries, including broken legs. Video from the scene showed the damaged front of one train entangled with the back of the other. The incident has caused major disruption, with all rail lines between Luton and Bedford closed.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the crash as a “devastating incident,” while a statement from Buckingham Palace said King Charles was “greatly saddened” and his thoughts were with the victims and their families.
