England Test Captain Ben Stokes Announces Retirement from International Cricket
England Test captain Ben Stokes has announced he will retire from international cricket following the conclusion of the ongoing third Test match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the decision in a statement on Sunday.
The 35-year-old all-rounder, who has captained the Test side since 2022, received a standing ovation from the crowd in Nottingham when the news was announced during play. Shortly after, he dismissed New Zealand’s Zak Foulkes.
In a statement, ECB Chairman Richard Thompson described Stokes as “one of England’s greatest ever cricketers and one of the defining figures of his generation.” He praised his “relentless competitiveness and his ability to produce the extraordinary when it matters most.”
Stokes’ career highlights include helping England to World Cup wins in 2019 and 2022. His unbeaten 84 in the 2019 50-over World Cup final and his match-winning 135 not out in the 2019 Ashes Test at Headingley are considered among his most memorable performances.
The announcement comes after Stokes was omitted from the second Test of the current series for breaking a team curfew.
