Iran and Iraq form joint committee for Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral

Iran and Iraq have established a high-level joint committee to oversee preparations for the final rites and mourning ceremonies for Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a joint press conference in Baghdad with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein.

According to the schedule released by Iranian officials, the funeral rites will begin in Tehran on July 4, where the body will lie in state for two days. The official funeral ceremony is scheduled for July 6 in Tehran, with officials anticipating the attendance of approximately 20 million people.

Following the ceremonies in Tehran, the body will be transported to the holy city of Qom on July 7. On July 8, the body will be taken to Iraq, where mourning ceremonies and processions will be held in Baghdad, Kadhimiya, Karbala, and Najaf.

The final ceremony will take place on July 9 in Ayatollah Khamenei’s hometown of Mashhad, where he will be buried in the Imam Reza shrine.
