Talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Tuesday, have been cancelled, according to a statement from the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussions were set to be held at the Bürgenstock resort.

The development followed the postponement of US Vice President J.D. Vance’s departure for Switzerland. A White House spokesperson confirmed that the Vice President would not be departing as planned but stated that the US looks forward to commencing technical talks soon. The spokesperson noted that the logistical and practical complexities of such negotiations have never been simple or predictable. Vice President Vance had previously said that plans for the technical talks were not yet finalized, but the American delegation was prepared to leave at the first available opportunity.

From the Iranian side, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Baqai stated that a final decision regarding the visit to Switzerland had not yet been made. The planned meeting in Bürgenstock was intended to discuss the implementation of the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,’ with representatives from Pakistan and Qatar also expected to be present as mediators.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry did not provide further details for the cancellation. The White House has indicated that it will provide updates on the next steps as soon as there is clear progress.

The cancellation of US-Iran talks in Switzerland has been linked to intensified Israeli military strikes on Lebanon. The Iranian delegation, including Chief Negotiator Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, reportedly did not depart for Switzerland due to the ongoing Israeli operations, which are said to have killed at least 16 more people.

No new date or venue for the postponed talks has been announced. The development has shaken investor confidence in Pakistan, causing the PSX KSE-100 index to plummet by over 2,800 points and reversing a recent four-day rally.

The now-postponed talks in Switzerland were intended to implement the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,’ a 14-point accord signed by the US and Iran to end the conflict. The deal, which includes a 60-day ceasefire, aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and provides Iran with relief from economic sanctions and waivers for oil exports. In exchange, Iran has agreed to onsite “down blending” of its highly enriched uranium and IAEA inspections.

While the Swiss foreign ministry confirmed the postponement of the meeting between the US, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar, it stated that Switzerland remains ready to facilitate. The development came after US Vice President JD Vance delayed his travel plans. Meanwhile, Israel, which is not part of the accord, has continued its military operations in Lebanon, raising questions about the durability of the agreement.
