NEPRA Reserves Decision on Rs 1.73 Per Unit Electricity Price Hike

ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has reserved its decision on a request to increase the electricity tariff by Rs 1.73 per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment for April.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) filed the petition, which applies to consumers across the country, including Karachi. The final decision will be announced at a later date.

During a hearing on the matter, CPPA officials informed the regulator that the energy sector faced significant challenges in April due to the effects of a regional conflict, which led to the complete unavailability of imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). However, officials stated that LNG contracts and spot cargoes were received in May, allowing LNG-powered plants to resume operations.

The CPPA also reported a decrease in electricity consumption across all consumer categories except the industrial sector. Looking ahead, the agency assured that planning for the next two months is complete and that consumers should not face major shocks in the fuel adjustments for May, June, and July.

The Power Division has formally requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve the imposition of additional charges on bulk power consumers under a new uniform grid charges mechanism. These ‘Use of System Charges’ (UoSC) are intended to be applied nationwide, including to K-Electric consumers.

NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on the matter for June 11. The proposal aims to standardize grid charges for all bulk power and open-access users as the country moves towards a competitive electricity market, with the first auction scheduled for June. The government argues that any financial gap resulting from the uniform charges should be covered by these new levies rather than subsidies.
