Despite a recently enacted ceasefire, significant violence has resumed between Israel and Hezbollah, with Israeli strikes killing at least 20 people in Lebanon on Saturday. The Israeli military stated the attacks were a defensive response to over 50 projectiles fired by Hezbollah. In contrast, Hezbollah accused Israel of hundreds of ceasefire violations and warned that continued attacks “will not pass without a response.”

The renewed hostilities have cast doubt on the durability of the truce and a broader US-Iran regional peace understanding. One of the deadliest Israeli attacks hit a residential building in Barish, killing a family of four. Another strike killed a Lebanese soldier, and an airstrike destroyed the Nabatieh branch of Lebanon’s central bank. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, over 4,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since March, while Israeli authorities report the deaths of 32 soldiers and four civilians.

Mona Khalil, an environmentalist active for two decades in protecting sea turtles in southern Lebanon, has died from injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike this month. The attack struck her home in the coastal area of Mansouri, a residence known as the “Orange House” which also served as a base for her conservation work.

Khalil was severely wounded and transported to Jabal Amel Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries after several days. She founded “The Orange House Project” in 2000 to protect green turtle eggs and had famously refused to abandon her work during the 2006 conflict. Environmental activists have called her death a major loss for conservation efforts in the region. Reports indicate that over 4,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2.
