Trump threatens ‘severe’ response to Iran after Jordan base attack

US President Donald Trump has threatened a "very severe" response to Iran following attacks on a US-operated military base in Jordan. In an interview with Fox News, Trump called Iran a "failed state" and claimed its government is unable to pay its police and military.

The US president also asserted that Iran does not have an effective army and is facing severe economic pressure, claiming inflation in the country had reached 300 percent.

In the latest development in the escalating conflict, reports on Monday claimed that Iran has shot down an American drone. This follows a series of retaliatory strikes between the two countries over the weekend.

The United States has reportedly conducted fresh strikes against Iran, according to reports on Monday, August 31. This development follows Iran's retaliatory attacks on US military targets in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates over the weekend.

Iran has expanded its retaliation for recent US strikes, targeting American military interests in both the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. According to state media, Iran's military used dozens of attack drones to strike Al Minhad Base in the UAE, targeting areas where US helicopters and personnel are stationed.

In a separate statement, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have used ballistic missiles to attack US-operated airbases in Jordan, specifically the King Hussein and Al-Azraq facilities. The Guards asserted the strikes targeted technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and fighter jet positions, causing “heavy damage.”

These attacks follow US strikes on two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday. The broader conflict, which reports state has been ongoing for six months, has reportedly killed thousands, displaced millions, and resulted in the deaths of 18 US service members.
