Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that the Strait of Hormuz is entirely under Tehran’s supervision. Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, Araghchi said Iran will maintain complete authority over the vital shipping route for the next 30 days while working to remove disruptions to maritime operations.

Araghchi emphasised that the responsibility for managing the strait lies solely with Iran and warned that any external interference could escalate tensions. He urged the United States to fulfil its obligations under a memorandum of understanding by pressuring Israel to halt military operations and withdraw from Lebanese territory, which he described as a key condition.

The foreign minister also proposed a new regional security framework involving Gulf nations, Iran, and Iraq, without the involvement of outside powers. He argued that security in the Middle East should be handled by the region’s own countries.

During his visit to Iraq, Araghchi also discussed preparations for the funeral ceremonies of late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which are expected to take place in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala in early July.
