Explosion Rocks Doha: Ras Laffan Plant Affected by Technical Fault

The death toll from the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG complex has risen to 13, with 66 others injured. Authorities have confirmed that Pakistani and Indian nationals are among the deceased. The injured include citizens from Qatar, Tanzania, India, Pakistan, Guinea, Nepal, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Nigeria.

While a technical investigation into the cause of the blast and subsequent fire has been launched, QatarEnergy has reassured global markets that the incident has not impacted LNG exports, gas processing activities, or operations at Ras Laffan port, which are all continuing as normal.

An explosion at Qatar’s massive Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex has left 54 people injured and 18 missing, authorities confirmed. The blast occurred on Sunday evening at the Barzan local gas supply facility as workers were restarting operations that had been halted after a previous Iranian missile attack in March.

While authorities termed the incident a ‘technical accident’ with no threat to public safety, the explosion was felt more than 70 kilometres away in Doha. Emergency crews have brought the resulting fire under control and a search for the missing individuals is underway. The facility is a critical part of Qatar’s energy infrastructure, which has faced significant challenges, including the March attack that damaged key units and slashed export capacity.
