Litton Das Century Puts Bangladesh at 278 vs Pakistan
A magnificent counterattacking century from wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das rescued Bangladesh from a precarious position, guiding the hosts to a respectable first-innings total of 278 against Pakistan on the opening day of the second Test in Sylhet.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Pakistan made immediate inroads. Veteran pacer Mohammad Abbas struck with the second ball of the match to dismiss Mahmudul Hasan Joy. Despite brief stands, Bangladesh’s top order crumbled, with another collapse after lunch leaving them reeling at 116-6 as Khurram Shahzad and Abbas ripped through the middle order.
Coming to the crease amidst the turmoil, Litton Das single-handedly changed the complexion of the day. He played with remarkable composure and aggression, scoring a brilliant 126 from 159 deliveries, an innings studded with 16 fours and two sixes. Das forged crucial lower-order partnerships, most notably with Taijul Islam (16), to frustrate the Pakistani attack and lift his team to a competitive score before Hasan Ali eventually claimed his prized wicket.
For Pakistan, the pace attack shared the spoils. Khurram Shahzad was the most successful bowler, finishing with figures of 4-81. Mohammad Abbas provided excellent support with an incisive spell that yielded three wickets, while Hasan Ali picked up two and spinner Sajid Khan claimed one.
In reply, Pakistan’s openers Azan Awais (13 not out) and Abdullah Fazal (8 not out) safely negotiated a tricky six-over period before the close of play. The visitors reached stumps at 21 without loss, trailing Bangladesh by 257 runs with all ten wickets intact.
