The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has restored the Gomal Zam Hydel Power Station to its original installed generation capacity of 17.4 megawatts. The station, located in South Waziristan, had been running at half capacity for the last eight years.
According to a WAPDA spokesperson, one of the station’s two generating units became non-operational in October 2016 due to a technical fault. While the second unit was restored in 2018, rehabilitation of the first was hampered for years by the law and order situation in the area. The final restoration works, which cost Rs359.5 million, began on April 5, 2026, and were completed in 80 days on June 25, 2026.
