Gilgit-Baltistan Government Formation and Power-Sharing Developments

In a significant development in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, Imran Nadeem of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Kifayat-ur-Rehman of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have been elected as the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively.

Both candidates were elected unopposed during a session presided over by the outgoing speaker, Nazir Ahmed. The election follows a power-sharing agreement between the PPP, PML-N, and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP). According to Ahmed, a PTI-backed independent member also did not oppose the appointments.

Sources indicate that due to the consensus reached by the coalition, the positions of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Chief Minister are all expected to be filled unopposed. This development solidifies the power-sharing arrangement following the recent swearing-in of newly elected members.

Thirty newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly were sworn in on Monday, marking a significant step towards the formation of a new government in the region. Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate administered the oath to the lawmakers, who include 13 from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), nine from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and six from the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).

The assembly session was adjourned to later in the day for the election of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the Leader of the House. Three members could not take the oath as the notification for their constituencies remains suspended by a court order. The PPP has formally nominated Amjad Hussain Advocate for the position of Chief Minister.
