Sindh’s senior minister has intensified protests against the Indus River Systems Authority (IRSA), accusing it of unjust water distribution by diverting significant quantities to the Chashma-Jhelum and Taunsa-Panjnad link canals while the province’s barrages face severe shortages. The minister rejected IRSA’s policy of “shortage equalization” and contested the deduction of water from Sindh’s share that entered the system due to extraordinary rainfall, calling the authority’s conduct a “blatant injustice.”

Warning that the crisis threatens not just agriculture but also urban life, the minister highlighted the direct impact on Karachi’s drinking water supply, industrial operations, and overall economic activity. A formal call has been made for the federal government to immediately intervene and ensure Sindh receives its full share of water as stipulated by the 1991 Water Apportionment Accord, with the provincial government vowing to defend its rights at every constitutional and legal forum.

Sindh’s Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has urged the federal government to intervene over an “unjust reduction of Sindh’s share” by the Indus River Systems Authority (IRSA). A 22% water shortage has persisted for ten days, with deficits reaching 42% at Guddu Barrage and 29% at Kotri Barrage, threatening the agricultural sector and water supply across the province, including Karachi.

IRSA officials maintain they are working to “equalise shortages between Punjab and Sindh.” However, Memon called the reduction unacceptable and contrary to the 1991 Water Apportionment Accord. A letter from the Sindh Irrigation Department to IRSA also noted that the province’s indent has not been met since May 16 and requested a halt to the operation of the Chashma-Jhelum and Taunsa-Panjnad link canals.
