The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has risen to 1,450, with rescue operations continuing into Sunday. The coastal state of La Guaira, approximately 40 kilometres north of Caracas, is the hardest-hit region, where dozens of buildings have collapsed.

According to Jorge Rodriguez, president of the National Assembly, 3,150 people have been injured, 12,721 are displaced, and 774 buildings have collapsed. Rescue teams, including more than 2,600 foreign workers, are searching for survivors among tens of thousands reported missing.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez stated that rescue efforts are ongoing, as survivors were still being recovered on Sunday. The government has suspended school classes for another week and has restored electricity to 75% of La Guaira. A presidential commission will be formed to assess the habitability of the remaining structures.

Reports also indicate that heavy rains following the earthquakes have caused flooding in affected areas, further complicating the situation.
