Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced early Thursday that the United States and Iran have electronically signed the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ (MoU), a historic agreement brokered by Pakistan to end the conflict between the two nations.

In a post on social media, the prime minister stated that the memorandum was signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by him as the mediator. The deal, which enters into force immediately, requires Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the United States lifts its naval blockade. US President Donald Trump signed the document at the Palace of Versailles following a G7 summit. Consequently, a planned signing ceremony in Switzerland has been cancelled, though technical talks are still expected to take place.

Prime Minister Sharif congratulated US President Trump and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian for their “wisdom, foresight and statesmanship.” He also gave special recognition to Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying his “tireless efforts, selfless dedication and instrumental role were critical in facilitating this breakthrough.”

President Asif Ali Zardari also hailed the signing as a historic moment, praising the diplomatic efforts of the Pakistani leadership. The deal aims to end the war that began on February 28, 2026, and includes provisions for the US to waive oil sanctions and facilitate a $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran upon a final agreement on its nuclear program.
