Internet users across Pakistan experienced widespread connectivity issues and slow speeds on Thursday, July 2, due to a fault in the SEA-ME-WE 5 (SMW5) international submarine cable system.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed the issue, stating that users might experience “intermittent degradation” in service quality and connectivity. The authority said it is closely monitoring the situation.

According to the PTA, Transworld Associates (TWA) is coordinating with the SMW5 Consortium to identify the root cause of the fault and determine an estimated time for restoration. In the interim, internet traffic is being rerouted through alternative international links to minimise the impact on users.

Reports of slow browsing, interrupted streaming, and unstable online services emerged from multiple cities. Internet monitoring platforms also registered a surge in connectivity problem reports from users across the country who had difficulty with browsing, online gaming, and video conferencing.

Pakistan News will update this story as more confirmed details become available.
