Updated: 8:24 PM PKT — July 1, 2026
The first spell of monsoon rains, accompanied by gusty winds, arrived in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and other parts of Pakistan on Wednesday, July 1, providing relief from the recent heatwave and causing a significant drop in temperatures.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a westerly wave is currently over the upper parts of the country, while moisture from the Arabian Sea is affecting central and eastern regions. The department forecasts that more moisture from the Bay of Bengal will reach northern areas, leading to more rain throughout the current week.
The PMD has forecast more monsoon rains, gusty winds, and isolated heavy rainfall for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan. In Sindh, scattered rain and winds are predicted for Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, and surrounding districts on July 3 and 4.
- Heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala.
- Flash flooding is possible in local streams and nullahs in mountainous regions, as well as in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan.
- Landslides could occur in vulnerable areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.
- Gusty winds and lightning may damage infrastructure such as electric poles and solar panels.
Authorities have advised tourists and travellers to avoid unnecessary movement during this period. Farmers have also been urged to take precautionary measures for their crops and livestock.
