UK PM Starmer Considers Exit Amid Pressure as Burnham Waits
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly considering a timetable for his departure, potentially paving the way for an orderly transfer of power to rival Andy Burnham less than two years after winning a landslide election.
Pressure on Starmer, which has been building for months, intensified after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won a decisive parliamentary election to return to Westminster. The victory has given hope to some Labour lawmakers that Burnham, known for his communication skills, could reverse the party’s fortunes amid Starmer’s sinking popularity ratings.
However, a potential Burnham premiership faces significant challenges. His specific approach to foreign affairs, the economy, and defence remains unclear. He would inherit a precarious fiscal situation, with Britain facing the highest borrowing costs in the G7, high debt, and years of anaemic economic growth. Investors are divided on whether Burnham would reassure markets, with economists at Citibank noting he would have “few tools to deliver meaningful change.”
While Starmer had previously pledged to fight any leadership contest, his business minister confirmed the prime minister was reflecting on the political challenges he faces. Former health minister Wes Streeting also reportedly has enough support to enter a leadership race but may strike a deal with Burnham for a senior role.
If he succeeds Starmer, Burnham would become Britain’s seventh prime minister in the decade since the Brexit vote. This high turnover highlights the ongoing struggle to satisfy an electorate angry over living standards, public services, and immigration.
