The certificates are frequently required for purposes such as employment, immigration, visa processing, admission to foreign educational institutions, and international travel. Required documents may include a valid CNIC or NICOP, passport copy, recent passport-size photograph, residential address proof, and supporting documents explaining the purpose of the certificate.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday gave in-principle approval for a uniform, nationwide system for issuing police character certificates, which will now be managed online through the National Police Bureau.
The decision was made during a meeting in Islamabad, where Naqvi stated that the new system will streamline and accelerate what was previously a complex process. He highlighted that the move would make it easier for citizens, particularly those travelling abroad, to obtain the necessary clearance.
“Police clearance certificates will now be issued through the National Police Bureau,” the Ministry of Interior confirmed. Citizens will be able to apply for and receive their certificates from home via an online portal.
During the same meeting, the interior minister also directed officials to establish a similar uniform system for issuing International Driving Permits.
Naqvi emphasized that transforming the National Police Bureau into an active and dynamic institution is a top priority for the government. The meeting, which took place on August 4, also included tributes to police martyrs to mark Police Martyrs' Day.
