At least six people, including five children, were killed in Mumbai on Sunday after heavy monsoon rains caused a group of buildings to collapse in the city’s eastern suburbs.
Civic authorities reported that two to three multi-storey houses collapsed in a slum in the Mankhurd area, resulting in the deaths of five children and one woman. The torrential rainfall, which exceeded 100mm in the city and reached 161mm in some areas, also caused widespread disruption.
Landslides triggered by the rain forced the closure of the expressway connecting Mumbai with Pune. Flight operations were disrupted, and several long-distance train services were cancelled. Authorities declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday as many parts of the city experienced severe waterlogging.
According to local media, at least three other people have been killed by falling trees in Mumbai since late last month due to the severe weather.
