Security Forces Kill Wanted Militant Commander Basir in Operation

Security forces killed five militants, including a wanted high-value terrorist ringleader, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Spinwam area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district, security sources confirmed.

The slain commander was identified as Kharji Umar, who also used the aliases Jan Mir and Tor Saqib. Sources stated that the government had placed a bounty of 3 million rupees on his head. He was described as the ringleader of ‘Fitna al Khawarij’, a term used by the state for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and was the mastermind behind numerous attacks on security forces and civilians in the region.

During the operation, security personnel also uncovered an extensive network established by the militant leader. This included underground bunkers, tunnels, and a web of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) laid around the Bobali Mosque in Spinwam. His death is being viewed as a significant success in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

This operation comes amid a resurgence in militant activities across Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Afghan Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Islamabad has repeatedly urged the interim Afghan government to dismantle terrorist sanctuaries on its soil, especially those linked to the TTP, but officials have stated these appeals have not been heeded.

In response to the increased threat, the state has intensified its counter-terrorism operations. Recently, security forces have conducted several major operations, including an ongoing sanitisation effort in North Waziristan’s Shewa area that has resulted in the deaths of 22 terrorists since May 17. These intensified efforts highlight the state’s resolve to combat the rising wave of militancy.
