Punjab lauded for record Eid cleanup as Karachi struggles with waste

Punjab’s provincial government has been praised for a record-breaking cleanliness operation during Eid-ul-Azha, while residents in parts of Karachi continue to grapple with uncollected animal waste.

In Punjab, a grand operation involving 184,000 workers and 60,000 vehicles removed 360,000 tonnes of animal remains. Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb called the operation “exemplary,” noting the first-time use of drones for monitoring. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a Rs 10,000 reward for each sanitation worker.

In contrast, days after Eid, animal offal and remains still litter streets and garbage dumps in several Karachi neighbourhoods, including Punjab Colony, Soldier Bazar, and North Karachi. Residents have complained of a pervasive foul smell and fear the spread of disease, urging the city administration to take immediate action.
