The Punjab government has provided further details on its green mobility strategy, which aims to address urbanisation and environmental challenges through a focus on electric transportation and sustainable infrastructure. The plan includes the expansion of electric buses, taxis, motorcycles, and three-wheelers to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and improve air quality.
A key part of the strategy is the establishment of Punjab’s first electric bus manufacturing and assembly plant, which has already begun operations. This local production is intended to lower costs, promote technology transfer, and create skilled jobs.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has set a target to deploy 5,000 electric buses over the next five years. The initial phase will see 1,500 buses operating in 91 tehsils across nine divisions, including Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Faisalabad.
According to the rollout plan, 61 electric buses are scheduled to begin service in 28 districts by July 10. An additional 189 buses are prepared for a soft launch, while 112 buses have already been delivered to cities such as Gujranwala, Multan, and Murree.
