PM Shehbaz Hails ‘Special’ US Ties, Praises Trump’s Peacemaking Role

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday lauded the “true and special relationship” between Pakistan and the United States, highlighting former US President Donald Trump’s “decisive intervention” in securing a ceasefire with India last year. Speaking at an event in Islamabad marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, the prime minister expressed gratitude for Trump’s role in restoring peace to South Asia.

“Last year, following India’s unprovoked aggression after the Pahalgam incident, it was President Trump’s timely and most decisive intervention that resulted in a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on May 10, last year,” Sharif stated, referring to a brief four-day conflict. “We shall forever remain grateful to President Trump for restoring peace in South Asia and saving millions of people. In this context, he will always be remembered as a man of peace.”

The prime minister emphasized the nearly eight-decade history of bilateral ties, noting that the US was among the first nations to recognize Pakistan. He said the partnership spans security, counter-terrorism, trade, investment, agriculture, science, education, health, and energy. Sharif also recalled historical cooperation during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the global war on terror.

The reception, held at the US Embassy, was attended by senior diplomats, government officials, and business leaders. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, attending as the chief guest from Pakistan’s parliamentary leadership, extended felicitations to President Trump and the American people. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship, calling it a “vital pillar for global peace and harmony.”

US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker described Pakistan-US relations as “stronger than ever,” noting a “renewed strategic partnership” under the leadership of President Trump and Prime Minister Sharif. She said the relationship is rooted in mutual respect and shared interests, with both countries working closely on regional peace, stability, and economic development. Baker also acknowledged diplomatic coordination that contributed to a recent Iran ceasefire.
