Pakistan, Iran Interior Ministers Meet on Sidelines of SCO Summit

BISHKEK: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, in Kyrgyzstan.

Both ministers are in the country to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Interior Ministers’ meeting, which is being held in Bishkek from June 4 to 6.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the main summit. Further sideline meetings between the interior ministers of SCO member states are expected during the course of the event.

US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker has described Pakistan’s hosting of high-level talks between the United States and Iran in April as the country’s “finest hour of modern history.” Speaking at a reception in Islamabad, she revealed the meeting was the highest-level diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran since 1979.

Baker stated that Pakistan was “uniquely positioned” to facilitate the 21-hour negotiations due to its good relations with both nations and its neutrality. She praised the “extraordinary” professionalism of Pakistani partners, who deployed over 10,000 security personnel and managed extensive logistics for the sensitive talks. The envoy also highlighted the growing strategic partnership between the US and Pakistan.
