Pakistan Issues Strong Warning to Houthis Over Shipping Threats

Pakistan has officially condemned threats by Houthi militias against commercial shipping in Saudi Arabian and Bahraini waters, warning that such actions pose a threat to regional security and the freedom of maritime movement. The country further warned that any aggressive action against Pakistani-flagged vessels would be considered a serious threat to Pakistan's national security and maritime interests. Pakistan affirmed its right to retaliate under the United Nations Charter if such an incident occurs. The context of these threats includes the Houthis' influence in Yemen, their perceived ties to Iran, and previous attacks on Yemeni airports. Critical waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb are also implicated in the broader regional security concerns.

Amidst escalating regional tensions, reports are circulating regarding a possible US-Saudi nuclear deal.

The target of the blockade is the Bab al-Mandab Strait, an 115-kilometer chokepoint separating Yemen from Africa, which is strategically significant as a quarter of global sea traffic and roughly 5 million barrels of oil flow through it daily. The blockade threat is seen as a direct assault on regional security and the "rules-based maritime order," with concerns raised over threats to commercial vessels trading with Saudi Arabia. Islamabad also fears Riyadh is being deliberately drawn deeper into the wider Middle East conflict.
