New details have emerged from the First Information Report (FIR) registered in the murder case of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq, with police adding terrorism charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
The FIR, lodged at Margalla Police Station on the complaint of the Air Headquarters Commandant, states that the incident occurred around 11:30 am on Saturday on 9th Avenue near the old Traffic Office in Sector F-8, Islamabad. Group Captain Tariq, who was on official duty, reportedly witnessed a man harassing a woman on the roadside. After identifying himself as a PAF officer and ordering the suspect to stop, the man initially fled on a motorcycle while issuing threats.
According to the FIR, the suspect then made a U-turn, returned to the officer’s vehicle, and fired a pistol from the driver’s side, striking Group Captain Tariq in the right shoulder. The bullet lodged in his chest, causing fatal injuries. The suspect then allegedly fled while firing into the air, creating panic. The FIR names Muhammad Kamran and Waseem Abbas as eyewitnesses.
Investigators have invoked Section 7 of the ATA, arguing that the attack on a serving officer on duty near sensitive locations like Air Headquarters and PAF Base Nur Khan was an act of terror intended to create fear among the public.
