A National Assembly standing committee has rejected a key government proposal in the Finance Bill 2026 that would have granted tax authorities direct access to taxpayers’ bank account data, citing strong concerns about potential misuse. However, the committee approved the imposition of a special excise duty on imported luxury vehicles, setting the rate at 40% for cars between 2000cc and 3000cc, and 41% for those above 3000cc. It also endorsed significantly higher penalties for tax evasion and late filing.

While the committee approved the new tax rates for the salaried class, members called for greater relief for the middle-income group. Separately, the National Assembly formally approved over Rs 407.41 trillion in mandatory expenditures for the upcoming fiscal year, with the largest allocations designated for domestic and foreign debt servicing.
