Love Marriage Sparks Tribal Violence, Village Burned in Jacobabad
JACOBABAD – New details have emerged in the case of a village being set ablaze in retaliation for a love marriage, with the bride and her father offering conflicting accounts of her age and the circumstances of the union.
The bride’s father, Rafiq Channa, has claimed his daughter is only 14 years old, which would make her marriage a violation of the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act. He further accused the opposing family of kidnapping his other four-year-old daughter and alleged that they set fire to their own homes. Channa stated that despite a case being filed, his daughters have not been recovered.
Contradicting her father’s statement, the bride asserted that she is 20 years old and married the man of her choice willingly in a Hyderabad court on May 4. The dispute escalated when armed assailants from the Channa tribe allegedly stormed the groom’s village, Siddique Arain, opening fire and setting dozens of homes ablaze.
The attack has left the entire village community displaced, with families forced to live under the open sky after their homes and belongings were destroyed. Malhar Bararo, the groom’s father, had previously told the media he was unaware of his son’s marriage and questioned the collective punishment meted out to the entire village.
In response to the violence, police have registered a case against 32 individuals from the Channa tribe under anti-terrorism laws, including 12 named suspects. Authorities have confirmed that five of the nominated suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson.
