Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the successful conclusion of the first high-level committee meeting between the US and Iran, crediting Field Marshal Asim Munir for the progress. In a statement, the prime minister said the breakthrough would not have been possible without the Field Marshal’s “tireless efforts, determination, and perseverance.”

Mr. Sharif also extended his gratitude to Qatar for its role in creating a conducive environment for the talks and to the Swiss government for hosting and facilitating the negotiations. He praised the diplomatic efforts of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the Foreign Office team, as well as the services of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Separately, technical-level talks have commenced in Switzerland to work on the implementation of the agreed-upon 60-day roadmap. Representatives from Pakistan and Qatar are also participating in these technical discussions.

Following the first session of high-level talks in Switzerland under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a new High Level Committee has been established to provide political oversight. Chief negotiators will lead working groups focused on nuclear matters, sanctions, and monitoring to ensure the implementation of the MoU, which aims for a final deal within 60 days.

Specific mechanisms were also agreed upon to de-escalate regional tensions. A communication line will be formed to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, a de-confliction cell, facilitated by mediators Pakistan and Qatar and including the Lebanese Republic, will be created to ensure the termination of military operations in Lebanon.
