Baqir Qalibaf Welcomes China’s Stance on US Sanctions

Iranian political figure Baqir Qalibaf has welcomed China's opposition to ongoing US sanctions against Tehran, according to reports on August 28.

This follows earlier statements from Iran's foreign ministry and president also welcoming Beijing's position and criticising Washington's economic pressure campaign.

This development adds a significant diplomatic element to Tehran's ongoing confrontation with Washington over the economic measures.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei has dismissed US efforts to isolate Iran economically, calling Washington's anti-Iran policy a "joke."

In a statement on the social media platform X, Baghaei said the US was attempting to portray its coalition campaign as successful by involving countries like Bahrain, with which Iran already has negligible economic ties. He accused the US of presenting the suspension of already-halted sports and educational exchanges as new measures, effectively "building a coalition against Iran in a vacuum."

The spokesperson reiterated that Iran would use all available bilateral means to counter US economic sanctions.

This development follows confirmation from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of discussions with Bahrain's Finance Minister, Sheikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, on maintaining financial pressure on Iran.
