The government has increased the price of petrol by Rs13.18 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs13.80 per litre, effective from July 11, 2026.

Following this adjustment, the new price of petrol stands at Rs310.71 per litre, up from its previous rate of Rs297.53 per litre. The price of HSD has risen to Rs323.30 per litre from Rs309.50 per litre.

The Petroleum Division issued a press release to notify these changes. Petrol is primarily used in private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws, and two-wheelers, with price changes impacting the middle and lower-middle classes. Similarly, diesel, used extensively in the heavy transport sector, power plants, and large generators, also affects the general public.

Under conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government doubled the climate support levy to Rs5 per litre, effective July 1, while simultaneously reducing the petroleum levy. The petroleum levy on diesel is now approximately Rs80 per litre, and on petrol, it is about Rs70 per litre, in addition to the Rs5 climate support levy.

The total tax on high-speed diesel amounts to approximately Rs101 per litre, which includes a Rs16 per litre customs duty, along with the petroleum levy, climate support levy, and inland freight equalisation margin. For petrol, the total tax is around Rs95 per litre, comprising a Rs20 per litre customs duty, petroleum levy, and climate levy.

Petrol and high-speed diesel are significant revenue generators for the government, with monthly sales ranging from 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes.
