Fatal Hit-and-Run in Karachi Caught on CCTV

Last Updated: May 17, 2026

One person was killed and two others were injured after a speeding double-cabin vehicle struck a car near Seaview in Karachi’s Defence area. CCTV footage of the collision near Khayaban-e-Bukhari shows the suspect vehicle, also visibly damaged, fleeing the scene. Darakhshan police have registered a case and are searching for the driver.

This deadly incident underscores the broader traffic chaos prevalent across the metropolis, a situation often exacerbated by non-functional signals, the absence of traffic police, and faded road markings. Public compliance with traffic laws remains highly inconsistent, creating hazardous conditions for commuters city-wide.

In an attempt to enforce discipline, traffic police launched a faceless e-ticketing system in October 2025, issuing 593,559 e-challans between January and April 2026. Observations show that motorists are more cautious on major arteries where cameras are installed, such as Sharea Faisal and I.I. Chundrigar Road. However, even on these routes, violations like motorcyclists riding without helmets persist.

The situation deteriorates significantly in areas where signals and cameras are out of order, forcing police to manage traffic manually and leading to disorderly vehicle movement. In areas with minimal police presence, especially at night, commuters often follow rules selectively. Motorcyclists have been observed tampering with their number plates to evade detection, while wrong-way driving occurs even in the presence of wardens during traffic congestion.

Despite these challenges, DIG Traffic Pir Mohammed Shah expressed reasonable satisfaction with the enforcement efforts, stating that technology has improved violation detection. He noted that fluctuations in violation data reflect factors like targeted enforcement drives and seasonal traffic patterns, and that a rise in tickets can indicate more effective enforcement. While automated systems easily detect violations like seatbelt use, the DIG affirmed that wrong-way driving remains a serious concern being addressed through dedicated field deployments.

Looking ahead, authorities plan to significantly expand the surveillance network to improve monitoring and enforcement. The DIG confirmed that the city’s camera infrastructure will be enhanced with the addition of more than 2,000 cameras in the project’s next phase, signalling a greater reliance on technology to manage Karachi’s traffic.
