An extreme heatwave is affecting Europe, with several countries reportedly breaking national temperature records.

In France, temperatures have been recorded above 44 degrees Celsius.

The record-breaking heatwave has been linked to at least 55 deaths in France, where hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with emergency cases. Authorities in the country have also imposed bans on public alcohol consumption and cancelled major public events. Temperatures have climbed to nearly 41 degrees Celsius in parts of France, while Italy is expected to record its first 40°C readings of the summer.

The extreme heat has caused motorway surfaces to crack open in Germany, and schools in the Netherlands closed under “code red” warnings. Serbia is also among the countries affected.

According to the World Weather Attribution group, scientists have assessed that this heatwave would have been virtually impossible without human-induced climate change.
