Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has stated there will be no compromise on Pakistan’s water rights under the Indus Waters Treaty. Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar also issued a warning to India regarding the treaty’s sanctity.

Speaking at a seminar, former diplomat Johar Saleem argued that the treaty is a global issue, not just a bilateral matter between Pakistan and India. Other experts at the event warned of major consequences should the treaty break down.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has directly warned that any attempt by India to block Pakistan’s water would have “serious consequences”.

Speaking at an international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty in Islamabad, Dr. Victor Gao, Vice President of the Center for China and Globalization, stated that stopping the flow of water for millions of people falls into the category of a war crime.

He described India’s conduct regarding the Indus river system as “completely unjust” and said the issue should be viewed within the context of human and international law.

Dr. Gao recalled that India had previously threatened to stop the flow of rivers to Pakistan. He noted that he had described such a threat as a “crime against humanity” during a past interview with an Indian television channel, adding that one should not do to others what one would not want done to oneself.
