Further details from the National Conference on Prison Reforms confirmed that the chief ministers of all four provinces signed the ‘Islamabad Declaration on Prison Reforms’. Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Sohail Afridi, and Balochistan CM Sarfraz Bugti affirmed their commitment to reducing unnecessary incarceration and improving prison infrastructure.

In his keynote address, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi described the reforms as a ‘shared institutional responsibility’ and emphasized that the criminal justice system must remain grounded in human dignity.

KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi called for the reform process to begin at Adiala Jail, where former Prime Minister Imran Khan is incarcerated. In response, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the reforms were not for the benefit of specific individuals like Imran Khan or Nawaz Sharif, but for the thousands of ordinary inmates in the country’s jails.

During her address at the Prison Reforms Conference on Thursday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the introduction of an “emergency button” in jails for prisoners.

The chief minister also spoke about her own experience of being incarcerated, stating she was held in solitary confinement for 24 hours at Adiala Jail and shared details of what she described as painful moments from her time in prison.

Sindh Chief Minister also addressed the prison reforms conference held in Islamabad. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also delivered a speech at the event.

During the address by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on the subject of prisoners’ rights, available reports state that Chief Justice Yahya Afridi stood from his chair.
