Punjab Reviews Progress on Kissan Card and Tractor Scheme
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a meeting of the Agriculture Department to review the progress of the Kissan Card, agricultural mechanisation, and other ongoing projects.
During the meeting, it was reported that 900,000 Kissan Cards have been issued in Punjab, providing farmers with PKR 360 billion in interest-free loans. Officials noted a 99% recovery rate for these loans, with approximately 80% of the funds used for purchasing fertilisers, which is expected to enhance agricultural production.
The government is distributing 34,000 green tractors in three phases across the province, with a total of 50,000 tractors to be provided over three years. The distribution process has been fully computerised, and physical verification of 12,650 tractors has been completed at the field level.
In an effort to improve agricultural services, 3,000 agriculture graduates were enrolled in an internship programme, providing extension services to farmers across 12 million acres. According to officials, 30% of these interns have secured permanent employment, with an overall job placement rate of 50%. An additional 1,500 graduates will be included in the next phase of the programme.
The meeting also approved the design for 10 new modern “Model Agri Malls” to be established across the province. Under the mechanisation programme, 280 modern agricultural machines have been delivered to farmers, with a target of providing a total of 2,000 machines by June 2027.
