The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has risen to 920, with tens of thousands of people still reported missing as of Friday, June 27.
The powerful quakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday evening. The coastal area of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas, was the worst-hit region, with numerous buildings flattened.
International rescue teams, including one from Chile, have arrived to assist in the search for survivors. However, a Chilean team leader at one collapsed residential complex in La Guaira stated there was little chance of finding survivors, with efforts now focused on recovering bodies. In some areas, residents have been digging through rubble with their bare hands, pleading for heavy machinery.
Pakistan has expressed its solidarity with Venezuela following the disaster. Meanwhile, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced that access to the disaster zone would be restricted from 8:00 pm on Friday.
