Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Baqir Qalibaf, has rejected claims by the United States that Tehran will use its unfrozen assets to purchase American agricultural products.

In a social media post, Qalibaf stated that the US was making false claims. He added that the only American ‘crop’ Iran has seen is ‘distrust’.

The statement follows assertions from Washington that a deal to unfreeze $12 billion of Iranian assets would require the funds to be used exclusively for purchasing US agricultural goods, such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as medicines. US officials had indicated the funds would be held in a special account monitored by Qatar.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chief negotiator Qalibaf have clarified that Iran will decide independently how and where to spend its funds, based on market prices and quality, not on US dictation.
