At least 32 people have been confirmed dead and 700 injured following the series of powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday. The quakes, which included magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, caused dozens of buildings to collapse in the capital, Caracas, and other cities.

Large-scale relief and rescue operations are now underway. The US Geological Survey has warned of potentially heavy casualties, with fears that the death toll could rise significantly. One of the major tremors occurred about 160 km west of Caracas in the afternoon, local time.

A state of emergency has been declared in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake was followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor.

The government has closed the country’s main airport and suspended most public activities. In the capital, Caracas, reports indicate that buildings have collapsed, trapping people in the rubble and disrupting fuel supplies. Emergency services have been activated for rescue operations.

While authorities have not yet provided a national toll, local officials have reported injuries and deaths. In the Chacao municipality of eastern Caracas, two structures collapsed, and at least 16 people were injured. The USGS stated that “high casualties and extensive damage are probable,” with initial estimates suggesting the death toll could range from 10,000 to 100,000.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez called for national unity, and the Interior Minister urged residents to move to safer areas. An appeal has also been made for doctors and nurses to report to medical facilities to assist with the response.
