The talks in Switzerland mark the first official round of dialogue since the United States and Iran electronically signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding days ago. The agreement, signed by US President Donald Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and mediated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the American blockade on Iranian ports.

However, the meeting was delayed after recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon, which prompted Iran to announce a renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz, complicating the diplomatic process. Despite the tensions, US Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism upon his arrival. Prime Minister Sharif is also scheduled to hold separate sideline meetings with delegations from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland, and the United States to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace.
