TEHRAN – Iran has announced the immediate closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all maritime traffic, escalating regional tensions and raising fears of a new global oil crisis.

In a statement, Iran’s Khatam-al Anbiya Central Military Headquarters said the decision was a direct response to alleged violations of the post-war memorandum of understanding by the United States and Israel’s continued military operations in southern Lebanon despite a ceasefire. The military command described the closure as the “first step” and warned that further actions could be taken if the “aggression and breaches of agreements continue.”

The move threatens to severely disrupt global energy supplies, as the strategic waterway handles a significant portion of the world’s seaborne oil and natural gas trade. The closure comes just days after commercial shipping had cautiously resumed in the strait following a nearly three-and-a-half-month disruption that began after US and Israeli military strikes against Iran on February 28.
