The attack occurred at approximately 6:15 PM as a Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement rally was concluding nearby. The bomber detonated at the main gate after attempting to enter the police compound. The First Information Report (FIR) registered under 7-ATA terrorism clauses has named Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander Muzaffar and other militants as suspected perpetrators. Among the victims was Dr. Maaz Khan, 33, who had returned from Romania for his sister’s wedding and was reportedly near the police station to purchase items for guests.

The IGP also stated that security agencies had been alerted to a possible threat, prompting stringent security measures around the police station, and police intercepted the attacker before he could enter the premises.

Malakand Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Fida Hussain stated that timely police action prevented the bomber from entering the police station, where police lines and other sensitive government installations are located. The explosion occurred as hundreds of people were participating in a public demonstration at nearby Kabal Chowk against the recent resurgence of terrorism in Swat.

Rescue 1122 deployed 13 ambulances and more than 45 rescue personnel to evacuate the injured. Rescue spokesperson Bilal Ahmad Faizi confirmed emergency teams provided first aid at the scene before shifting the wounded to various hospitals. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the suicide attack, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives.

Witnesses reported that the protest had attracted a large crowd from different parts of the district, and the explosion occurred as the event’s final speaker was addressing participants, triggering panic among those present. No group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting. Earlier on Sunday, a police van was targeted in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast near the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway toll plaza, injuring two police officers in Peshawar.
