Eid-ul-Adha 2026 Cattle Market Updates

As Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated across Pakistan with religious fervour, an unusual incident occurred in Murree’s Circle Bakote area. According to local residents, a bull brought for sacrifice became uncontrollable after being unloaded from a vehicle, wandered onto the roof of an adjacent house, and fell into a deep ditch.

The animal was severely injured from the fall and was slaughtered on the spot. The incident took place as Muslims across the country performed animal sacrifices in observance of Sunnat-e-Ibrahimi, following Eid prayers held in cities nationwide.

The number of sacrificial animals in Pakistan has seen a significant decline, dropping from 10 million in 2022 to an estimated 6.5 million this year. The percentage of households performing the ritual has also fallen from 25% to 17% over the same period.

This trend is being attributed to soaring inflation, which has impacted the purchasing power of citizens. Economic experts note that even households with higher incomes are finding it difficult to afford sacrificial animals this year due to the high cost of living.

In the final hours before Eid-ul-Adha, bull prices have unexpectedly plummeted at Lahore’s Shahpur Kanjran livestock market, with some animals selling for nearly half their previous value. Traders report drops of up to Rs 1.75 lakh per bull due to a surplus of animals and lower-than-expected buyer demand, forcing many into distress sales.

The sharp decline in bull prices has prompted a heavy influx of buyers, but has negatively impacted goat sales as consumers shift to the more affordable larger animals. This has added further pressure on goat traders during the crucial Eid season, highlighting significant market volatility.
