Pakistan Faces Potential Series Whitewash Against Bangladesh
SYLHET: Bangladesh are on the cusp of a historic Test series victory, leaving Pakistan on 316-7 at the close of day four, still 121 runs short of a record 437-run target. Spinner Taijul Islam was the chief tormentor with four wickets, but a defiant Mohammad Rizwan remains unbeaten on 75, keeping Pakistan’s slim hopes alive heading into a tense final day.
The match seemed to be slipping away from Pakistan before a formidable 134-run sixth-wicket partnership between Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha resurrected the chase. Resuming from a precarious position of 162-5, the pair batted with grit and determination, frustrating the hosts through the final session. Agha scored a crucial 71 before being dismissed late in the day, while Rizwan anchored the innings, ending with Sajid Khan (8 not out) at his side.
Earlier, Pakistan’s chase began poorly, losing Abdullah Fazal and Azan Awais to slump to 41-2. Captain Shan Masood (71) and Babar Azam (47) staged a recovery with a counter-attacking stand that took the score to 133. However, the momentum shifted after lunch as Babar was caught behind brilliantly by Litton Das off Taijul. Saud Shakeel was then bowled for six by Nahid Rana, and Masood fell soon after, caught at short leg.
Just as the Rizwan-Agha partnership looked set to take the game deep into the final day, Taijul struck a decisive blow, deceiving Agha with a well-disguised arm ball that rattled his stumps. Two overs later, Hasan Ali was dismissed for a duck, caught at first slip, putting Bangladesh firmly in control.
With a potential first-ever home Test series win against Pakistan in sight, Bangladesh pace coach Shaun Tait expressed confidence, stating, “I think we’ll bowl them out.” Conversely, Pakistan batting coach Asad Shafiq remains optimistic. “If this partnership between Rizwan and Sajid goes long, I am very optimistic,” he said. A victory for Pakistan would require them to complete their highest-ever successful run chase.
