Israeli Strikes Continue in Gaza, Causing More Palestinian Casualties

Last Updated: May 18, 2026

Israeli military operations are ongoing in the Gaza Strip, with recent drone strikes on the Jabalia camp killing at least 11 Palestinians and injuring sixty others. A separate drone attack targeting a community kitchen resulted in three more Palestinian fatalities.

Following the latest attacks, Hamas has called on international mediators to pressure Israel into halting its military offensive in the besieged territory.

Amidst the sustained conflict, the Israeli military is confronting a severe manpower crisis that threatens to impact its combat missions. The army currently faces a shortage of approximately 12,000 personnel, with the strain of continuous fighting on seven different fronts putting significant pressure on the military system.

To address the shortfall, Israel has intensified recruitment efforts. The number of female combatants has reportedly reached a record level, with 5,300 women recently joining the military. Additionally, about 7,000 foreign nationals—exclusively Jewish individuals—have been recruited from countries including the United States, France, Australia, Russia, and Ukraine.

Despite these measures, military officials state that current personnel levels are insufficient for ongoing missions and that the army still requires another 7,000 combat soldiers. The long tours of duty for reservists have led to widespread fatigue and increased pressure within the ranks.

In response to the growing crisis, the military command is demanding new legislation to extend the duration of mandatory service. Officials have warned that the manpower shortage could become significantly more severe if immediate actions are not taken to bolster its forces.
