Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Visits Azerbaijan for High-Level Talks

BAKU: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz met with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev on Sunday, discussing the strengthening of strategic ties within a trilateral framework that also includes Turkiye. The chief minister is in Baku on a three-day visit to represent Pakistan at the 13th UN World Urban Forum (WUF13).

During their meeting, both leaders praised the development of fraternal relations and strategic partnership between the two nations. Discussions covered cooperation in political, economic, diplomatic, and defence sectors, with a focus on the strong potential for expanding trade ties. It was also noted that service centres based on Azerbaijan’s ‘ASAN Khidmet’ model have been established in Pakistan.

The chief minister conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and her father, former premier Nawaz Sharif. President Aliyev reciprocated the greetings and recalled the friendly relations between his late father, former president Heydar Aliyev, and Nawaz Sharif. CM Maryam also commended Baku’s beauty, describing it as a “remarkable example of harmony between culture and modern urban planning.”

At the UN forum, the chief minister is scheduled to address the Leaders Summit and present Pakistan’s vision for developing safe, resilient, and inclusive cities. Additionally, she will inaugurate the Pakistan Pavilion on Monday to showcase Punjab’s transformational initiatives to a global audience.

A key feature at the pavilion will be Punjab’s ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ scheme, described as one of the world’s largest and fastest affordable housing programs. According to Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, who is accompanying the CM, the program has already approved 160,000 loans, with 100,489 families having moved into their new homes. Prior to her official meetings, the chief minister paid respects by laying floral wreaths at the mausoleum of Heydar Aliyev and at Martyrs’ Lane.
