Latest updates
Samsung has launched a publicity campaign and taken to social media to mock Apple following the unveiling of its rival's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo.
In response to the launch, Samsung put up billboards in major cities including Seoul, Tokyo, and London with slogans such as "Welcome to Foldables." The company also posted on its website detailing its efforts to reduce the weight of its own foldable devices.
On the social media platform X, Samsung posted sarcastic messages aimed at Apple, with taunts including "reheating our leftovers" and "So far, so same," suggesting a lack of significant innovation in the new iPhone.
Market analysts are watching the new competition closely. Liz Lee, an associate director at Counterpoint, called Apple's decision to price the iPhone Duo at $1,999 a "pretty bold move." The research firm projects that Apple could capture 25% of the foldable market, while Samsung is expected to hold a 38% share this year.
Apple has released further details about its new iPhone Duo, confirming the device will be powered by an A20 Pro chip built on a 2-nanometer process. The phone includes a vapor-chamber cooling system and the company's latest C2 modem to enhance performance and efficiency.
Storage options for the iPhone Duo will go up to 2 terabytes, a capacity not currently offered by competing foldable models. Pre-orders for the device will begin on October 16, with the phone going on sale from October 23.
Apple has released further specifications for its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, revealing a significant change in its biometric security approach.
The device will not include Face ID. Instead, Apple is reintroducing Touch ID, which will be integrated into the side power button. Unlocking with an Apple Watch will also be supported.
When fully open, the iPhone Duo measures approximately 5.2mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone produced by the company. When folded, its thickness is around 11.3mm, and it weighs about 254 grams. The frame is constructed from Grade 5 titanium, with titanium components also used in the hinge mechanism for improved durability.
The phone has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and features Ceramic Shield protection. It will be available in two finishes: Star White and Night Sky.
The external cover display is a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen. The main internal 7.6-inch OLED display features a nano-texture finish to reduce glare and reflections. Both screens support ProMotion technology up to 120Hz and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Apple also stated that support for the Apple Pencil on both displays will be introduced later this year.
