Rawalpindi Declares Holiday as Heavy Rains Raise Nala Lai Flood Risk

Following continued torrential rains in Rawalpindi and Islamabad overnight, the Rawalpindi administration has declared a holiday for all public and private educational institutions on Monday, September 1. The decision came as the water level in Nala Lai rose to dangerous levels, reaching 24 feet at Katarian and 17 feet at Gawalmandi bridge. Authorities have issued a high alert and advised residents in low-lying areas along Nala Lai to evacuate to safer locations. According to WASA officials, a total of 160mm of rain was recorded across the twin cities, with specific areas like New Katarian and Golra receiving 112mm and 106mm respectively.

Following persistent heavy rainfall on Saturday, August 31, reports indicate that floodwater has entered residential areas in Islamabad. The development confirms earlier warnings from authorities about the risk of urban flooding in low-lying parts of the capital during the current monsoon spell.

A new spell of monsoon has brought further heavy rain and strong winds to Islamabad and surrounding areas, as forecast by the Meteorological Department.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds continued in various parts of Islamabad on Sunday, as the city experiences an ongoing monsoon spell.

A fresh spell of heavy monsoon rain, accompanied by strong winds, lashed parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Sunday afternoon, turning the weather pleasant after a sunny morning.

The downpour was particularly intense in areas like the Red Zone, Sector F-6, and G-6. The strong winds uprooted a tree in the city's commercial hub, Blue Area. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that intermittent rain will continue in Islamabad and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the PDMA has issued an alert for the eighth monsoon spell, predicting rain with thunderstorms in most districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until September 5.

Following heavy monsoon rains in Islamabad and surrounding areas, the district administration has decided to open the spillways of Rawal Dam after the water level rose to 1751.40 feet. The spillways are scheduled to be opened at 6 AM on Sunday, August 31.

In response, Rescue 1122, police, and other relevant departments have been placed on high alert. The administration has urged citizens to avoid going near streams, nullahs, and low-lying areas during this period and to take necessary precautionary measures.
